Simira Sewing Skills

Second Intake Report

I am excited to report that our second intake for the Sewing Skills commenced on the 7th of June 2020. We were scheduled to start in April but the program was hindered by Covid-19 lockdown. We managed to organize private transport to carry four girls from Binga to Harare because up to date public transport between provinces has not started operating yet.

We have taken necessary precautions to protect our girls from Covid-19, each one is making her own fabric face masks and we practice recommended personal hygiene measures prescribed by our national health department. It is our great pleasure and privilege to partner with ten Hands of Hope projects in assisting the transitioning of ten girls into adulthood. We hope to guide them spiritually as we equip them with sewing skills and other life skills.

Meet the girls!

Faith Mumpande (21yrs)

Faith is from Manjolo Transformation Center in Binga. Her mother who is a vegetable vendor raised her with the help of pastor John Simulungwe and his compassionate ministry team at Manjolo Transformation Center.  She finished her secondary school in 2015 and passed six subjects. Faith is hoping to use the skills she will get from our project to look after herself and help her mother raise her siblings. She speaks Tonga and English well and is making tremendous effort in learning Shona.

Loreen is from Lubimbi Transformation Center in Binga. She was born in a family of eight and she is the last born. She finished her secondary school in 2016 and passed six subjects but did not manage to go to college due to lack of school fees. Her mother is now aged and is no longer capable of working in the field as she used to do. She is hoping to further her studies and look after her mother using the sewing skills she is going to get.  Loreen speaks Tonga, Ndebele and a little bit of English and is also learning Shona.

Moreblessing Chitima (21yrs)

Her hope is that she would be able to take care of herself after finishing the course.

Constance Moyo (31yrs)

Constance is from Child at Heart Transformation Center in Chitungwiza. She started working as a maid at the age of thirteen. In 2007 Pastor Pindurai and his late wife Clara took her as their daughter after seeing her being mistreated by the people she was working for as a domestic worker. When she joined the Pindurai family she had already lost a lot of school years, so she just got basic literacy and numeracy skills. At age eight she became one of the caregivers at Child at Heart Transformation Center. She can read, understand and write well in Shona as she did not finish primary level of schooling. She is a hard worker and is very focused on getting sewing skills.

Edeline Muteyiwana (20yrs)

Edeline is from Wings of Hope Home in Harare. She lived a hard life as her widowed mother found it difficult to look after her and her two siblings. Through the help of Wings of Hope Home, she managed to sit for her ordinary level exams last year and passed two subjects. She is hoping to use the sewing skill after finishing the course to sustain her siblings and her ailing mother.

Nosizi Zulu (17yrs)

Nosizi is from Lusulu Transformation Center in Binga. Her mother took care of her and other siblings from money she raised as a domestic worker. She, however, did not finish her secondary education due to lack of school fees. Her hope is to finish the sewing course and use the skill to look after her young siblings so that they would finish secondary school. She can read and write well in Tonga and a little bit of English.

Mitchel Dube (19yrs)

Mitchel is from Fountain of Hope Home in Bulawayo. Her father was a mine worker, but lost his job at the mine. The Government Department of Social Services took Mitchel and her sister to Fountain of Hope Home after the department was alerted of the plight of the two girls. It was her dream from childhood to become a fashion designer. Her hope is to finish the course, raise money and further her studies in sewing.

Naume Muchongoyo (21yrs)

Naume is from Alaska Transformation Centre in Chonhoyi. Her mother raised her and her little brother since she was 2 years old. She wrote ordinary Level exams last year but somehow did not collect her results because of school fees arrears. She is hoping to find a job as tailor after finishing the course. She can read, write and understand Shona.

Doricker Chimuramba (17yrs)

Doricker is from Green Valley Transformation Center in Harare. In 2017 her parents separated due to her mother’s health issues.  Her mother is currently bed ridden.  She dropped out of school so that she can look after her mother. She is hoping to use the skill to raise her little sister and mother’s medications.

We are grateful to HOH USA for making this program possible. We are looking forward to a wonderful journey with the girls.
